The "Offensive Genius"

Ladies & Gentlemen.........the Adam Gase article is finally here. I've been teasing it ever since I started the Annoyed Jets Fan Blog, but away we go.

What a face & what an initial interview.
I remember going into the '19 off-season praying for an offensive minded head coach. The Jets had not had one of those since Rich Kotite. Yes Kotite's lone season is known as the worst in Jets history, but looking past that, it was still time for a change. The league had gone more offensive minded with their head coaching in recent years & the Jets were still stuck going with defensive minded for their head coach. While the league was playing chess, the Jets unfortunately were playing checkers.
When the Jets made it official that they hired Adam Gase though, I was not pleased. I wanted someone new like Matt Rhule or Eric Bieniemy & not a coach who was just fired by a division rival. But I did not want to be that negative Jets fan & I thought I'd give the self-proclaimed, "Offensive Genius" a try. The initial interview was a disaster, but I did not want to judge him just off that.
Going into the season, I felt pretty confident. The offense looked good during the preseason & I thought they could finally be a competent offense in the NFL. Also, the whole smelling salt thing was AMAZING. I even tweeted, "THAT's MY COACH!" out of pure excitement. It finally looked like the Jets were ready to take that next step as a team, especially with the offense. Boy was I wrong. Week 1 was not good, plain & simple. Yes Sam Darnold 100% played with mono, but the play calling itself was just very vanilla. You can never have that, especially during the first game of the season.
What angered me was how Gase handled the team after Darnold was out. He all but QUIT on them. Weeks 2-5 were a dumpster fire. The offense resembled that of a Pop Warner teams rather than an NFL one. And I do not want to here that it was because Trevor Siemian & Luke Falk were in at QB. Gase put 0 effort into the offensive game planning & just used the two QB's as an excuse. That's really great to hear coming from a head coach. Now I was not expecting them to win, but at least make it competitive. Losing those three games by a combined score of 23-84 makes me sick. To make it worse, they only scored 1 offensive TD that entire time. Excuse me as I go violently puked.....

Jets fans felt the same way watching your offense last year coach
When Darnold came back, Things were rocky at first. Yes, they beat the Cowboys, but three straight loses to the Patriots, Jaguars, & Dolphins were just plain ugly. Losing to the Dolphins was a real let down because he was going against his former team. After that game too he had some real snide remarks to the media while also cursing which led to Bart Scott calling him out during the post game show. I was all for Scott doing that because Gase did not look like an NFL head coach, both with his coaching & how he was handling himself off the field.
Things got better Weeks 10-12 as the offense finally showed life. There was creativity & they were doing things that had not done all season. Then word got out that Darnold went to Gase to change the offense. After that, the egomaniac that Gase is reverted back to his old ways. I won't continue on with the rest of the season because my blood is already boiling & I'm trying to move on.

Probably making up one of his many excuses
There are two things that irk me about Gase. One is that he's a BIG time excuse maker. There were so many excuses about why the offense looked abysmal last year & I for one got tired of hearing about it. Yes Darnold was out, yes the OL was the worst in the league, but even with that, as an offensive minded head coach you have to take what you have an adjust your game plan. Gase is more of a, "It's my way or the highway" coach & that just won't work. Yes it works for Bill Belichick, but he has 6 rings to back it up. Gase has a losing career record! Also, Gase 100% leaks stuff to the meida, like the Lev Bell bowling fiasco. That way, he draws attention away from himself & blames a player. Just watch this year if the Jets get off to a slow start, his henchmen will start writing about if Darnold has what it takes to be a Franchise QB. He does by the way.
The other thing that annoys me about Gase is how everyone praises him for being Peyton Manning's OC during his MVP year in Denver. Manning even called the Johnson Family to vogue for him. Why Peyton, WHY! Okay cool he was Manning's OC that year. Does anyone really think Manning actually listened to him when he gave input? If you do then I have some great ocean front property to sell you in Oklahoma. Manning liked Gase because it was someone to talk to in the building at odd hours since Gase lives there & because he held his Gatorade bottle. Gase has been coaching for 17 years and in the 5 seasons he did not have Manning as his QB, his offenses ranked: 21, 24, 25, 31, 32. Some offensive genius let me tell you!

Maybe "Beard Gase" will do a better job?
Listen, I know I'm coming down hard on Gase in this article, but rightfully so. You can't be dubbed an "Offensive Genius" & lay a steaming hot turd like he did last year with the Jets offense. I don't want to hear how the Jets went 7-9 either because there were plenty of games that the offense looked eh, yet Gregg Williams & the defense helped secure a win. Jets fans should want to see a high powered offense like the majority of teams have now a days. To have that, Gase needs to adjust. Stop trying to fit a square peg in a round hole & just go get a round peg! There needs to be adjustments to the offense this year. I know today he said last year was bad & that they are throwing it out, but I'll believe it when I see it. He's been talking the talk a lot this off-season, now let's see if he can walk the walk.
To end this, I will say something nice about our beloved teams head coach. He did help get that coffee chugging moron Mike Maccagnan fired which we all appreciate. Other than that, I'm just not a fan. And look, I will not be a Jets fan that sits here & hopes they lose so Gase can get fired. I want them to win, I just don't think they can with Gase. Now if they do, I will be beyond happy & fully admit I was wrong. Until that happens, I'll continue to tweet #FireGase & think he's a phony "Offensive Genius" of a head coach. #TakeFlight
