It's Mock Draft Monday people!!! Here is my mock draft & my explanation of each pick & the entire draft as a whole.
1st Round (11): Andrew Thomas-OT-UGA
Anaylsis: We all know how horrendous the Jets OL was last year. Joe Douglas has made it a point this offseason to address the unit that's been neglected for over a decade & he does it again with his first selection as the Jets GM. Thomas is my favorite OL prospect out of the big 4, & the Jets should be thrilled if he makes it to them at #11. He's a plug & play LT & is protecting Darnold's blindside for years (hopefully a decade+) to come. This also allows Edoga & Fant to battle it out for the starting RT job.
2nd Round (48): Michael Pittman Jr.-WR-USC
Analysis: Pittman Jr. has really risen up the draft board the past few months. Back in January, he was looking like a late Day 2/Early Day 3 selection & know he's a legitimate early Day 2 selection. MPJ is an extremely polished WR who already has a connection with Darnold from there days together at USC. These two also already workout with each other in the offseason, which makes it even better. To me, MPJ is the type of WR who in the big moments, you get the ball in his hands. That is the type of WR the Jets have been missing since Brandon Marshall's outstanding '15-'16 season (good lord he was amazing). Just like Thomas, MPJ is another plug & play player for the Jets.
3rd Round (68): Cameron Dantzler-CB-Miss. St.
Analysis: Joe Douglas helps build the CB depth & gives Gregg Williams a new toy to play with. Dantzler's stock to a big hit with his slow 40 time at the combine, but that doesn't scare me at all. Watch this kids tape, he keeps up with the best of them in the SEC. To me, that is FAR more important than how fast one runs in a straight line. He may not start right away, but can work his way into a starting spot sooner rather than later. *Once again, thank you Dave Gettleman for this lovely pick. Enjoy Leo Williams!
3rd Round (79): Zach Moss-RB-Utah
Analysis: I've started to read up/watch highlights of Moss lately & I've become quite a fan. Moss is a very strong runner who hits the whole with nice burst. Yes, the Jets already have Lev Bell, but most likely, he'll be gone after next season (I don't want that, but ya know, Adam Gase). Moss can start out as the backup this season & then become the starter if/when Bell is let go. If by some miraculous reason Bell stays, then the Jets have an extremely solid 1-2 punch at RB, something they've had a few times when they've been successful (Martin/Jordan & Jones/Greene).
4th Round (120): Ben Bredeson-OG-Michigan
Analysis: Joe Douglas continues to remake the OL with this selection. Bredeson was a 4yr. starter for Michigan & is as solid as they come. He is strong in both the run & pass game & offers a steady support in the interior of the line. It would not surprise me if ended up starting as a rookie, which again would create competition for the other OG spot (GVR/Lewis) & could spell the end to Brian Winters tenure as a Jet (fingers crossed).
5th Round (158): Tyler Johnson-WR-Minnesota
Analysis: An extremely underrated WR & a potential big time steal. I just read that scouts have given 30 starters grades to WR's this draft & many GM's believe that they can get valuable starting WR's in the later rounds of the draft. I believe Johnson is one of them. Just like Pittman Jr., Johnson is an extremely polished WR who just makes play after play. Watch some highlights of this guy & you'll be just as impressed.
6th Round (191): Tanner Muse-S-Clemson
Analysis: Yes you might be thinking that the Jets already have the best safety duo in the NFL with Jamal Adams & Marcus Maye. But they need a backup after that. In comes Muse. With Clemson being on national TV what seems to be every weekend, I've seen a good amount of Muse, & I like what I see (I watch a lot of football). He's big (6'2/230) & seems to have a nose for the ball (7 career ints). If anything, he provides valuable depth at the safety spot & who knows, maybe Gregg Williams finds a way to use him with Adams & Maye on the field as well.
6th Round (211): Jonathan Garvin-OLB-Miami
Analysis: This is a throw a dart at the board type of pick. I'm a big Miami Hurricanes fan, so I usually watch them lose Saturday before watching the Jets lose Sunday. My thoughts on Garvin is that he has all the potential in the world, he just doesn't always tap into it. When he does, you see it by the plays he makes. With that being said, there's no better coach to try to get that potential out of him than Gregg Williams. If he can't then no one will. Fingers crossed that he can.
Overall Thoughts: The Jets make this a major offensive draft & rightfully so. Past Jets GM's have just focused on defense without looking to build on the offense at all. Joe Douglas does the exact opposite & hopefully it turns out for the best. Yes, I did not address the OLB position until the last pick, but Rome wasn't build in a day & neither will this Jets roster. The offense needs to be the prime focus on this draft & a position like OLB can be addressed either in free agency still (Markus Golden) or in the draft next year. Other than that, the Jets come away from this draft with 2 new OL & 2 new WR's. All four can potentially be starters, or on the 2-deep, come Week 1. Now will this draft happen, probably not. With our luck the Jets will go IDL at 11 & I'll proceed to throw my TV at the window. But hopefully that doesn't happen & offense is the focus! #TakeFlight
A lot of good thoughts here. I would only question the RB and Safety picks so high. One could go with a CB like Javelin Guidry in the later rounds as well as RB further down like Anthony McFarland. Thomas is a solid choice, but I think Jets fans are overly pessimistic on Wills. He's got great footwork and hand pop and would move to Left Tackle just fine with solid offensive line development (unfortunately, the Jets coaching is sorely lacking here). Thomas has a higher floor at Left Tackle than Wills, so in a lot of ways, your choice makes more sense in the short term. I think we will see how patient JD/Gase is with the kinds o…
