In a few of my previous posts, I explained how important the later rounds were for the Jets. You build a winning team by drafting well in the middle rounds, which is something the Jets haven't done at all the past decade+.
Well I know I don't speak for everyone when I say this, but I think Joe Douglas did a solid job on Day 3. The Jets owned the 120's with picks 120, 125, & 127. I'll admit I really wanted them to draft a WR with one of the three picks & was a tad disappointed when they didn't. But I trust what JD is doing. The three players drafted were as followed:
-La'Mical Perine (RB): He's a hit the hole hard, bruising back who will bring a different style of running behind starter Lev Bell. His 40 time wasn't great but watching his tape, you can see he plays faster than his time.
-James Morgan (QB): Many questioned why a QB this early, but I see why. As we saw first hand last year, it is very important to have a solid backup QB & I think Morgan can be just that. He had a down '19 season, but that was due to injuries. His '18 tape is a lot better. Morgan has the smarts & arm to become a solid backup QB to Sam Darnold.
-Cameron Clark (OL): I'm really happy with this pick. If you don't know much about Clark, watch his tape against Clemson this past season. He was dominate & opened up a lot of eyes with his play. He will mostly have to move to OG in the NFL, but there is nothing wrong with that. Personally, I think he can challenge for a starting spot this summer. Yet another pick to help protect Sam Darnold.
In the 5th round, JD got an absolute STEAL in Virginia CB Bryce Hall. Coming into the season some had a 1st round grade on Hall, but a broken ankle obviously dropped him down the draft boards. The fact that JD got him this late is amazing & I think Hall will make a lot of teams pay for passing on him.
In the 6th round, punter Brendan Mann was the choice, all but ending the Lachlan Edwards tenure. The 2018 Ray Guy Award winner has a career gross average just under 49 yards. Mann also handles kickoffs with a 66% rate touch back rate. The other 6th round pick netted them CB Quincy Wilson in a trade with the Colts. Wilson was a 2017 2nd round pick who had two good seasons before a down year last season. Hopefully DC Gregg Williams can get him back to how use to play.
Overall, I like what JD did on Day 3. He added more depth to the OL & CB groups while finding good backups at the RB & QB positions. As I said before, hopefully JD drafted Jericho Cotchery's & Kerry Rhodes' & not Shaq Evan's & Bryce Petty's. #TakeFlight
