Jets fans, we finally know what it's like to have a competent GM.

What has been killing the Jets the last decade (I say this phrase far too much in all my articles) is the fact that the Jets have failed miserably in rounds 2 & 3. These rounds are where very good teams succeed in & most of the Jets picks in these rounds are already out of the NFL. Enough said about that.

Coming into Day 2 of the draft, Joe Douglas had to fix the trend & boy oh boy did he. I said in my previous article that I wanted a WR at #48 because I thought it was important to get Sam Darnold a big time WR. Well when the Jets were about to be on the clock & I saw they traded back, I'll admit I was a tad scared. WR's were flying off the board & I knew Denzel Mims (who I'm a big fan of) was there, & yet the Jets traded back. Gaining the extra 3rd (101) was great, but I still thought getting a big time WR was far more important. Welllllll JD obviously knew what he was doing because he added a 3rd round pick & still got Denzel Mims! What a move & what a selection. Can't wait to see the Darnold-Mims selection.

JD then went defense with the first two 3rd round picks taking Ashtyn Davis (DB/CAL) & Jabari Zuniga (OLB/FLA). I'll be honest, I wanted the first four selections to be ALL offense, but I get what he did here.

When I first saw the Davis pick, I'll admit, I didn't know much about him. But thanks to listening to the analysts & the power of Google & YouTube, I immediately became a fan. Davis can play multiple positions (S/CB/OLB/KR/PR), is lightning quick, is a solid tackler, & just seems to make big time plays. He'll be a very nice addition to Gregg Williams' defense.

**Imagine this scenario: 3rd & 8, Jamal is coming off the edge & Davis is covering the slot. WOW that is great!

Regarding Zuniga, I'll admit, I wasn't thrilled. But I think that was because I'm still dealing with PTSD from last year when Maccagnan took Jachai Polite (YUCK). After walking it off (And putting back a refreshing Bud Light) I realized that he's a much different player than Polite. He has nice explosion off the ball & there's no question about his motor, unlike Polite (I hate how much I mentioned him in this article). I think Gregg Williams will get the most out of him.

To end the 3rd round, JD did the unthinkable & traded with the Patriots......

That hasn't happened since the 2000 Draft, but this trade was definitely in the Jets favor. JD knows he needs to build this roster so he traded back & added two more picks in the 4th round, plus got an extra 6th in next years draft.

So what next? Heading into the final day of the draft, the Jets have THREE picks in the 4th, one in the 5th, & two in the 6th. JD has SO MUCH to play with! As I stated in a previous article, I talked about how when the Jets were a somewhat consistent playoff team, they did very well drafting in the 4th round (Cotchery, Rhodes, Smith). JD needs to begin this trend again. There are plenty of players still available who can an impact next year either as a starter or backup. I'm not going to name, names, but I can see JD going WR/IOL/CB in some order. After that, I think he'll go BPA, which is common in the 5th & 6th round.

So far so good for the Jets first year GM. Hopefully he finishes his first draft strong! #TakeFlight
